Treat AC electrical smell as a safety decision before treating it as an HVAC diagnosis. Stop the heating and cooling system only when that can be done without approaching smoke, sparks, damaged wiring or a suspected gas source. A carbon-monoxide alarm, gas odor, visible smoke, active fire, shock, arcing or symptoms of exposure calls for leaving the area and using emergency, fire, utility or medical guidance as appropriate; do not keep testing the system.
A brief dusty smell at seasonal startup is not the same observation as hot plastic, insulation, ozone-like odor, smoke, repeated tripping, or a smell that strengthens while equipment runs. An HVAC or electrical professional can isolate power and inspect wiring, terminals, motors, controls, heaters, disconnects, and connected circuits to find heat damage and its initiating condition. When calling, state whether smoke or heat is present, where the smell is strongest, which operating mode triggered it, breaker behavior, and recent work, and request explicit electrical-safety diagnostics before restart. Emergency numbers, fire-department guidance, utility procedures, licensing boundaries, and inspection requirements are local, but an active electrical-burning condition should never be downgraded to routine troubleshooting. Turn the system off and leave the area or call emergency help if there is smoke, fire, sparking, intense heat, or an escalating burning odor, without resetting protection or opening any cabinet.
