EPA says a moldy area smaller than about 10 square feet can often be handled by an occupant, but that size is only one planning factor. DIY is not appropriate merely because a patch looks small: sewage or floodwater, HVAC involvement, hidden growth, major water damage, unsafe materials and occupant health concerns can all move the job beyond a limited cleanup.
If you hire help, ask about relevant experience, training, references, how moisture will be corrected, how occupants and clean areas will be protected, and what is excluded. EPA does not certify mold inspectors or remediation firms, and state or local credential rules must be checked separately.
