Damage documentation

What should you document after roof damage?

After the area is safe, photograph or video the roofline and visible exterior damage from the ground, plus interior stains, drips and damaged property. Record the date and time noticed, relevant weather, affected rooms, prior known condition, actions taken and every contractor or insurer contact. Label causes, start times and concealed conditions as unknown when they are unknown.

Keep written estimates, temporary-protection scopes, contracts, invoices and receipts. Ask your insurer or agent what the actual policy requires before discarding material or authorizing permanent work when circumstances allow, but do not delay emergency safety measures. Documentation does not itself establish coverage, causation, reimbursement or claim value.

Put safety before diagnosisNever climb onto a damaged roof, enter an unstable attic or stand beneath a sagging ceiling to obtain a photograph; safety outranks a more complete record.

Location changes the boundary, not the evidence

Where is the property?

Choose a state and optionally add a city and ZIP. This does not create a separate location page; it makes the limits of the answer visible.

U.S. national guidance

What changes after you choose a location?

Choose a state to make the geographic boundary explicit.

A ZIP helps identify possible roofing service areas and storm-response zones, but it does not prove jurisdiction, address-level coverage or an available roofing professional.

Applies nationallyThe safety and observation sequence on this page is general U.S. guidance.
Must be confirmed locallyBuilding codes, permits, contractor licensing, climate loads, rental duties, insurance procedures, prices and provider availability require current evidence for the exact property.
Separate immediate safety, weather entry and project scope

Which situation best matches the roof?

01

Visible exterior change

Ground-level wide and close views can locate the observation without asserting cause.

Notice next: Include stable landmarks and preserve the original files and dates.

02

Interior water or material damage

Room-by-room images and a factual timeline show impact while the roof opening may remain unknown.

Notice next: Record the location and change over time without disturbing unsafe material.

03

Emergency protection begins

Before-and-after records and a written temporary scope distinguish stabilization from permanent repair.

Notice next: Keep receipts and record who authorized each step.

Safe observation

What should you record before the call?

A short, factual description helps the next professional choose the right first inspection without treating a symptom as proof.

A record shows what was observed and done; it does not prove event causation, policy coverage, code compliance or the condition of concealed layers.

What to record
  1. Safe wide and close images with location context.
  2. Observed timeline, weather and prior known condition.
  3. Affected rooms, items and temporary protective actions.
  4. Estimates, contracts, invoices, receipts and communications.
Stop and get appropriate help
  • Documentation would require roof, ladder or unstable attic access.
  • Electrical, structural, falling-material or severe-weather hazards remain.
  • The effort would delay evacuation, emergency help or urgent stabilization.

Check local call availability

Want a roofing professional to inspect the roofing concern?

This guide can help organize the symptoms, but it cannot inspect the property or confirm the repair. Confirm the request details to prepare a call that checks whether a participating provider can accept a new an eligible roofing project request.

  • Describe what is happening, where you notice it, and when it began.
  • Share ground-level observations about timing, visible damage and interior water entry without climbing onto the roof.
  • Ask what the visit includes before authorizing work.
Confirm the request, then continue to call

Roofing project availability and job acceptance are confirmed on the call.

Short answers

Questions people ask before the call

Should I wait for an adjuster before stopping more damage?

Do not delay life safety or urgent stabilization. Contact the insurer promptly and document safe necessary actions.

Do photos guarantee the claim will be paid?

No. They support a factual record; the policy, cause, exclusions and claim decision remain separate.

Should a roofer tell me what insurance covers?

A roofer can document condition and scope. The insurer or qualified adviser addresses the policy decision.

Sources and boundaries

What supports this guide?

Educational information only: this page cannot inspect the property, diagnose hidden work, provide legal advice, quote a repair or promise service availability.

Sources support the general guidance shown here. Address-specific rules, responsibility, price and availability still require current local confirmation.

If conditions are unsafe or rapidly worsening, stop troubleshooting and contact the appropriate emergency service or qualified local professional.
