What should you do when the AC unit or coil is frozen?

Put people and hazards first. Arrange a safer cool place during dangerous heat; leave or call the appropriate emergency help for a CO alarm, gas odor, smoke, burning odor, sparks or shock. If water from thawing ice may reach energized parts, keep away. Stop the cooling call through the normal thermostat control, do not chip or heat the ice, and do not open equipment panels.

Record exactly where ice is visible, whether the system was cooling or heating, how airflow changed, filter condition and any water, sound or error display. Ice on an indoor cooling coil is not the same observation as frost during a heat pump's outdoor operation. Airflow, coil, control and refrigerant conditions require separation; do not add or release refrigerant yourself.
