Treat furnace carbon monoxide risk as a safety decision before treating it as an HVAC diagnosis. Stop the furnace and heating system only when that can be done without approaching smoke, sparks, damaged wiring or a suspected gas source. A carbon-monoxide alarm, gas odor, visible smoke, active fire, shock, arcing or symptoms of exposure calls for leaving the area and using emergency, fire, utility or medical guidance as appropriate; do not keep testing the system.
Do not substitute an HVAC sales call for emergency response; for follow-up, ask the contractor to document test methods, findings, repair scope, and any required reinspection before operation. Alarm rules, fire-department response, fuel-gas enforcement, disclosure duties, and who may clear equipment for use vary by state and municipality. If a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds or occupants have possible exposure symptoms, move to fresh air and contact emergency services, following the alarm and local responder instructions. Soot, vent damage, repeated furnace shutdown, or an unusual flame may justify prompt inspection, but the absence of visible signs does not establish that carbon monoxide is absent. Once responders address immediate safety, qualified evaluation can include the alarm context, combustion and draft testing, heat-exchanger and venting inspection, appliance interactions, and corrective verification.
