Why is the furnace short-cycling? The symptom narrows the next observation but does not identify a failed part. For the furnace and heating system, first separate what the thermostat or normal controls request from what the indoor and outdoor equipment actually do. Note airflow, temperature change, timing, sound, odor, visible water or ice and whether the problem affects one room or the whole home, without opening a panel or reaching into equipment.
A safety-limited heating cycle is different from a thermostat losing its call, an oversized comfort cycle, or a blower-only change, and the cadence cannot safely identify which is occurring. Inspection can observe a complete call for heat while checking airflow, temperature response, limit and pressure safeties, ignition sequence, venting, thermostat signals, and equipment configuration. Ask the service company to diagnose the shutdown trigger before proposing parts and to include the measurements and repeat-cycle verification in its work description. Altitude, outdoor temperature, fuel characteristics, vent arrangement, code adoption, and building heat loss can alter both operation and acceptable corrective scope. Track whether heat begins before each shutdown, whether the blower continues, and whether restricted airflow, unusual odor, excessive cabinet heat, a status light, or thermostat fluctuation accompanies the pattern.
